Playing the circus or a light summer grotesque larded with virtuosity and peppered with a big dose of humor.
Viktor Cathala and Kati Pikkarainen belong to artists who can rise above their physical perfection and can see the world around them with a detached view and humour. And this is what their recent show Circus Season confirms. They invite spectators to an extraordinary world where the traditional circus meets the contemporary one.
An outstanding performance that melts different styles and talents from around the world – from the Kanak siblings from Eastern Siberia who fly with ease through the air, through the Swedish juggler Matias Salmenah whose art defies gravity, to the talented air acrobat and equestrian vaulter Ludovic Baladin. And then there are, of course, Viktor and Kati themselves who are the contemporary circus in flesh.
“Kati is the reason to love clowns. She is indubitably the prettiest clown Letní Letná has hosted.Watching her is going through all phases – starting by the fright, then there is a light astonishment and then complete amazement. She is a clown that will absorb you!” explains Ivana Pěkná, manager of the festival Letní Letná.
Circus Season is a story of a year tour of a nomad circus. It is a story of cold winter days, spring flowers, scorching summer days and autumn colours. One town after another, one rehearsal after another, one show after another…
“The spectacle is a compilation of our experience and feelings, of our dreams and illusions, but mainly of our buried memories we had to resurrect,” Explains Viktor Cathala.
From a traditional vision to quite a new perspective, from performance to intimacy, from public to private. A double vision that seduces the public both by the performances as well as by a tender view of traditions. Bigorre.org, 13. 10. 2018
In a modern way, they bring an ode to yesterday's circus life, the roaming, the assembly of the tent and the smell of the ring. Het Nieuwsblad, Belgie, 28. 7. 2018
In a nutshell, this Circus Season depicts the same kind of emotions as the previous opus, the fragile balance of human relations and especially that of a couple. But also their incredible strength. By plunging into collective work, abandoning their duet, the cirque Aďtal could have drowned. In addition to their rigorous technique, thein modesty saved them. They have manufactured a perfectible and authentic show. Unsettling. Kati is present throughout the show and resembles Gelsomina in La Strada. Le petit Bulletin, Francie, 29. 6. 2018
